Case study II: describes two initiatives of special farmers-business-co-operations.

Almo
Almo (alp oxen) is a farmer-business cooperation founded 20 years ago and comprising about 550 cattle farmers, two smaller butchers and one large producer and distributor of meet delicacies. Products made from Almo are being processed and sold exclusively by theses business partners. Almo is producing and marketing beef from alp oxen as high-quality/speciality product. The initial idea behind setting up the initiative was to overcome the undesirable development in the field of cattle breeding in Austria. The founders were aiming at adding value to the product in a way, which benefits the farmers, but also the business partners. The initiative is one of the leading projects within the regional development activities.

• Manturo
MANTURO Netzwerk NatURrassen’ is a farmer-business cooperation founded in 2003. It aims at (re)establishing and commercialise products from two rare-breeds of pigs, MANgalitza and TURopolje. In 2006 collaborations with two butchers were established (Harger, Feiertag), both of which are still partners and members of the board of Manturo. The butchers are family run-businesses, experienced in high-quality, specialty and organic products. At present, six farmers and the two butchers are members of MANTURO. 300 sows are being processed per year with an explicit aim to raise this number to 1500 within the next five years. Farm size ranges between 30 and 120 sows. The initiative is not confined to one particular region. The pig farm of the founder is located in the region of Voitsberg (Stallhofen) but close to the borders of two other regions (Graz-Umgebung and Deutschlandsberg), where three of the farms are located. The main marketing tool, the ‘Genussregion Wessteirisches Turopoljeschwein’ also highlights not one particular region rather an area overlapping three regions.
